October 19, 2018 – About Pine Needles

As you are out and about, don’t panic if you see evergreen trees dropping needles, or showing yellow or brown color. Needle-drop is a normal part of the life cycle. Inner needles are the oldest, and as they age and get shaded by new growth, they photosynthesize less effectively and are eventually shed. The tree lightens its load, which is helpful, as snow and ice may cause extra needles to hold too much weight for the longer branches to bear.
