Out and About in the Arboretum

July 10, 2026 – Fall Phlox
Despite the name, Fall Phlox, or Phlox paniculata, bloom in summer months, and are currently enjoying their time in the atrium of our community building.

July 3, 2026 – Milkweed
Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is currently thriving in the Medford Meadow and acts as an ideal pollinator for many insects including the threatened Monarch butterfly.

June 26, 2026 – Catalpa
Notice the neat patterns on the Catalpa flowers, but look closer as well. The little legs of a bumblebee, deep in the hunt for pollen, can be seen sticking out of the blossom.

June 19, 2026 – Spiraea
Spiraea japonica, with its tiny blossoms,doesn’t have to be huge to make a big impact.

June 12, 2026 – Rainbow
Sometimes storms can result in incredible displays in the sky, like this rainbow. Can you see the second rainbow?

May 22, 2026 – Rhododendron
The name Rhododendron comes from ancient Greek rhódon, meaning “rose”, and déndron, meaning “tree.” It is also the state flower of both Washington state and West Virginia. This specimen is blooming on Woolman Way.
