Barton Arboretum and Nature Preserve

of Medford Leas

The Pinetum

In the fall of 2016, the Arboretum worked to develop a collection of conifers — The Pinetum. This component of the Barton Arboretum and Nature Preserve was funded from the proceeds of our Evening in the Arboretum Event 2016.

Located on the Medford Campus, near the Community Building parking area, this collection of conifers, or cone bearing trees, was developed to highlight the importance of these trees to the environment. Conifers are important for both ecological and aesthetic purposes. In existence for over 250 million years, conifers are vital to the regulation of the earth’s climate and air quality.

The collection development included the acquisition and planting of new specimen trees located along a paved path to provide ease of access to the area. as well as the installation of a low stone retaining wall.
