Notice the neat patterns on the Catalpa flowers, but look closer as well. The little legs of a bumblebee, deep in the hunt for pollen, can be seen sticking out of the blossom.

June 19, 2026 – Spiraea
Spiraea japonica, with its tiny blossoms, doesn’t have to be huge to make a big impact.

June 12, 2026 – Rainbow
Sometimes storms can result in incredible displays in the sky, like this rainbow. Can you see the second rainbow?

May 22, 2026 – Rhododendron
The name Rhododendron comes from ancient Greek rhódon, meaning “rose”, and déndron, meaning “tree.” It is also the state flower of both Washington state and West Virginia. This specimen is blooming on Woolman Way.

May 15, 2026 – True Pine
On April 24, we mistakenly identified a Spruce tree as a Pine. Today, however, we have an image of a true Pine branch, highlighting the interesting way it produces new growth. This one can be found on Woolman Way but similar specimens are all over the Arboretum.

April 24, 2026 – Springtime pines
