Barton Arboretum and Nature Preserve

of Medford Leas

April 9, 2021 – Daffodils

Typically at this time of the year, we host Daffodil Daze Walks, to share the beauty of our daffodil collection on the Medford Campus.

This year, we encourage residents and staff alike to get out and enjoy our beautiful collection that began when a former resident, Midge Ilgenfritz, arrived at Medford Leas in 1978, with some of her prized bulbs from her garden in NY.

Over the past four years, over 4000 additional daffodil bulbs have been planted on the Medford Campus.

The daffodil symbolizes new beginnings, because they are the first spring flowers to bloom right after the winter frost. The brightness of the flower is thought to be a sign that there is a rebirth and light ahead. The blooms remind us of sunshine and the coming of summer.

As we celebrate our Fortieth Anniversary of the Arboretum, surely these daffodils are something for us all to be proud of and to enjoy on both of our Campuses.
