Known as a tree of the prairie states, some believe the Bur Oak Quercus macrocarpa rivals the majesty of the White Oak Quercus alba. In the Midwest, Bur Oaks were often found in grassy meadows by pioneers. At this time, as you enter the Medford Campus from Wilkins Station Road, you will note the Bur Oaks along the side of the road. These trees have a massive trunk, as well significantly sized acorns, the largest of any North American Oak. If you look closely, you will see that the tree branches are laden down with the weight of the acorns. The Bur Oak grows best in the open, away from the forest canopy, so the Meadow is a perfect location for this species.
