Barton Arboretum and Nature Preserve

of Medford Leas

November 12, 2017 – Magnolia macrophylla

[su_row][su_column size=”1/2″][su_spacer size=”10″]

Last week a new tree, Magnolia macrophylla, was added to the Arboretum on the Medford Campus outside of Court 23. This tree is a replacement of a tree that had been planted in honor of Tak Moriuchi a number of years ago near the Arts and Social Wing. This new tree will have a stronger opportunity to succeed in this new location. Commonly known as big leaf magnolia, it is noted for its huge oblong leaves, up to 30 inches long. Don’t let the current size of this tree fool you– it will ultimately grow to 30-40′ tall at maturity, and have a fragrant bloom in May. A tree was originally planted in honor of Tak’s service to the Estaugh Board, 1969-2006, and is a wonderful reminder of his unfailing dedication and service to the Medford Leas community.
