Lumberton Meadow Wildflowers of the Week 2018

September 1, 2018 – Horsemint
The wildflower of the week is the Horsemint (Monarda punctata). It can be seen at the Lumberton campus along the drainage area in the center of the upper and lower meadow.
August 24, 2018 – Common Fleabane
The wildflower of the week is the Common Fleabane, Erigeron philadelphicus. It can be seen along the mowed drainage area in the upper meadow at Lumberton Leas.
August 16, 2018 – Partridge Pea
Partridge Pea, Chamaaecrista fasciculata, is fairly abundant along the paved path at the upper end of the meadow at Lumberton Leas.
August 6, 2018 – Rose Mallow
The wildflower for the week of 6 August is the Swamp Rose-mallow, Hibiscus palustris. It can be seen at the lower end of the Lumberton upper meadow where the central path cuts through dividing the upper and lower meadows.
July 30, 2018 – Summer Phlox
Summer Phlox (Phlox paniculata) is a pretty garden plant that has become established in the wild.
July 23, 2018 – Cardinal Flower
Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) likes to grow in wet places, such as stream banks and swamps in rich soil. It is a beautiful red spike. The name is not for the bird, but for the vestments of Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church. It is primarily pollinated by the Ruby-throated Hummingbird.
