If you like colorful blooms on trees, you will love the horse chestnuts (Aesculus sp.) as they come into bloom. These surely are attention-grabbing specimens in the spring. The trees feature beautiful clusters of white or red flowers at this time. In addition to the beauty of the blooms, horse chestnuts also provide great shade in the summer, and grow quickly. With a growth habit of 13 to 24 inches each year, they will grow to a mature height of 50 to 75 feet. Though they are native to the mountainous wilds of Greece and Albania, you can find these trees easily on the Medford Campus as you travel through the covered walkway from Court 10 to Court 6; one was recently planted on the Lumberton Campus as well.
