Leatherleaf mahonia, Mahonia bealei, belongs to a class of shrubs entitled broadleaf evergreens. This shrub provides year round interest with its spiky leaves, but right now is a great time to enjoy its fragrant yellow flowers. These flowers will later yield to inky colored blue berries in the fall. This shrub grows very smoothly and requires very little pruning to control its size. While there are a number of these shrubs on the Medford Campus, you can easily find them in Court 4 and Court 2.
