July 26, 2019 – The Impact of Trees

We all enjoy the benefits of trees, especially in the summer months, as we are out and about in the Arboretum. As you move along the pathway from the Community Building on the Medford Campus towards the Bridlington neighborhood, you will enjoy the cooling shade and impact of a number of different trees.

Benefits of trees during the summer include:

  • Trees can reduce air temperature by blocking sunlight. Further cooling occurs when water evaporates from the leaf surface.
  • Deciduous trees block sunlight in the summer, so place deciduous trees on the south and west sides of your home, and along walkways.
  • Trees can shade hard surface areas such as driveways, patios, and buildings — thus minimizing landscape heat load, a buildup of heat during the day that is radiated at night, resulting in warmer temperatures.

Check out the impact and value of trees, particularly during the summer months. As you move along this path during a hot summer day, you will surely have a strong appreciation for the value of these trees.
