The Lenten rose (Hellebore hybrid) is an early bloomer in the Arboretum. It is an evergreen groundcover with dark-green, shiny foliage. The new growth generally appears during late January and February, and precedes the 3- to 4-inch cup-shaped flowers that quickly emerge through the ground. The image shown here is from Courtyard Garden 17, but they can also be found in Courtyard Gardens 13 and 25. An added bonus– blooms are long lasting for all to enjoy!
