Barton Arboretum and Nature Preserve

of Medford Leas

February 1, 2019 – Paperbark Maple

Yes, the winter season can be an interesting time to view trees as you are Out and About in the Arboretum. Of particular note is the Acer griseum, commonly known as Paperbark Maple. We are fortunate to have several of these very special specimens on the Medford Campus — all in various stages of development — from more youthful trees in Courts 41 and 22 to the more mature Paperbark Maples in the Atrium as you enter the Community Building. These specimens are noted for their exfoliating copper orange colored bark, which peels into large curls and then remain on the tree rather than falling to the ground. Native to China, these trees were brought first to England in 1899, and shortly thereafter to the States. In addition to the locations listed above, we also have Paperbark Maples on the Terrace, as well as by Ober’s Pond.
