April 26, 2019 – Fothergilla

Fothergilla gardenii, commonly known as dwarf Fothergilla, can be found in Court 22 on the Medford Campus and at the entry garden to the Lumberton Campus. This deer-resistant shrub is a compact, slow-growing, deciduous shrub that typically grows 2-3′ tall. This shrub is in bloom now with fragrant flowers. Fall foliage brings a medley of yellow, orange and red leaves. Genus name honors Dr. John Fothergill (1712-1780), an English physician and botanist who grew plants from around the world in his London garden.
